Welcome
xDSL

The xDSL Watson family systems are high quality products, made by the Swiss company Schmid Telecom AG. The SHDSL Watson 5 series working with TC-PAM16 linecode have great variety and provide operators with all 2Mb/s user interfaces, 1-pair, 2-pair or 4-pair DSL transmission, remote powering of NTUs, remote power with up to two regenerators, and capability of building lines of 8 regenerator sections.

Watson 5 Ethernet - LTU
Ethernet modems are SHDSL transmission systems compliant to ITU-T G.991.2 Annex B (G.SHDSL.bis) and to ETSI TS 101 524 (ETSI eSDSL).
SHDSL uses Trellis-coded PAM-16 and PAM-32 linecodes supporting multiple linerates as well as 1-pair, 2-pair and 4-pair DSL transmission.
The Watson 5 Ethernet modems are available as plugin cards and as tabletop units. Both plugin cards and tabletops can work as DSL master modems (STU-C) and as DSL slave modems (STUR).
The modems can be configured with an RS-232 terminal through a command line interface (Monitor).
For remote management a Telnet access to the Monitor is available. The plugin modems also have an SNMP agent integrated. One agent can control all plugin modems in a subrack and all tabletop modems connected to the subrack modems.

Watson 5 Router
Watson SHDSL router is an innovative Next-Generation DSL solution designed for enabling high-speed Internet or point-to-point connectivity to business customers.

Watson SHDSL router uses Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) technology, which is a transparent ex-tension of Ethernet-base LANs into wide area networks. No conversion of packet formats is re-quired when transiting between LAN and WAN. This transparency greatly simplifies network opera-tions, reduces deployment costs, and increase service levels. EFM includes maintenance function that make the operation of large wide-area Ethernets feasible.

Watson SHDSL router features either two or four SHDSL ports. Symmetrical data rates up to 5.7 Mbit/s are available on each copper pair. Using EFM pair bonding, data rates of 22.8 Mbit/s over 4 copper pairs can be achieved.

Watson SHDSL router integrates an eight port Ethernet switch, an SPI Firewall and a VPN gate-way, which protects networks by providing robust security features and standard IPSec Virtual Pri-vate Network tunneling.

Watson SHDSL router features a user-friendly graphical Web-based management interface. This highly intuitive GUI is easily mastered by the novice user, but is also highly flexible and offers so-phisticated users and system administrators full control of the system.

Watson Subrack
The Watson Subrack SZ.379.V3 is a 19” chassis, designed to hold up to 12 Watson family LTU plug-ins. It comes with power supply module that allows main and reserve powering. Watson Subrack can be installed in a 21” rack with adaptive brackets.

xDSL applications

WATSON DSL equipment offers the optimal solution: minimal operational costs and low investments. Typically, the WATSON solution costs less than a quarter of a comparable carrier service offer. And the investments are less than a third compared to a leased line/mux solution. Which means that the WATSON investment is amortised much faster than any other solution. WATSON has the right features and the flexibility to combine them to the optimal solution for access problems. Watson xDSL applications offer  value; quality, reliability and performance at the right price.

System configuration
•  LTU - rack or 19'' minirack installation
•  NTU – tabletop or 19" minirack;
•  19" subrack with 12 slots for WATSON LTUs and 1 Common Management Unit (CMU) and/or 1 Alarm Control Unit (ACU);
•  Common Management Unit (CMU) -
in the 19” subrack acts as SNMP agent and brings centralized management facilities to the system.

•  Alarm Control Unit (ACU) - in the subrack enables the connection of the EIA485-bus, the Monitor interface, and the alarm relays.

•  Regenerators for extended reach of DSL links
•  Multiple interfaces LTUs could be plugged-in in one subrack (E1, n x 64kbit/s and/or Ethernet)

Line Termination Units (LTU)

The Line Termination Units (LTU) are available as plugin modules. The LTU may be configured via jumper as LTU-L or LTU-R. The LTU-R is capable of remotely powering remote NTUs. The LTU-R is always a DSL master, whereas the LTU-L can work both as DSL master and DSL slave.

Network Termination Unit (NTU)

The Network Termination Unit (NTU) is available as a tabletop unit. A slide switch configures the NTU as either NTU-R or NTU-L. An NTU-R is remotely powered by an LTU-R, whereas an NTU-L is powered locally by a 230V/48V mains adapter. The Watson 5 Ethernet NTU has no slide switch and will work as NTU-L as long as local powering is available.

WATSON Regenerators

The Watson 5 Regenerator is used to extend the reach of a DSL link. The regenerator works in 1-pair and 2-pair modes, is cascadeable for very long links and is available with a number of housing options.
